How do you read the guitar tabs in sheet music?

Question by Merlin: How do you read the guitar tabs in sheet music?
I've been a piano and saxophone, so I know how to read standard notation in music, and the notation of rhythms is of course easy there, with the stem markings, but in guitar tableture on sheet music, I can't understand if I'm just supposed to play the full chord or play the lyrical "sung" part.
