Some questions for bass players?

I need some help. First, I was wondering how you can use your whole arm when playing, as if you were playing all the strings. I see players like Mark Hoppus using their whole arms, and I really would like to know how. When I play, I can only use my wrist, and on the one string, it doesn't look very good.
